The Presidential Dollar coin program kicked off with the release of a circulating dollar coin honoring the nation’s first President, George Washington. Washington was among the finest men of his generation. He was an inspiring military leader, commanding the Continental Army to an unlikely victory against the British in the American Revolutionary War and a precedent-defining statesman as the first President of the United States under the Constitution.

As President, Washington put America first by opposing political factionalism and working with the nation’s most capable statesmen despite their differing viewpoints. Washington’s cabinet included Vice President John Adams, Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of War Henry Knox, and Attorney General Edmund Randolph.

When Washington retired to his Mount Vernon home at the end of his second term, he set a precedent that would survive for more than 200 years. In democracies, those elected take the mantle of leadership for a defined term and then willingly hand over power to their successor. In 1796, the nation held its first truly contested election, with Adams barely eking out a win over Jefferson in the electoral college. In 1800, Jefferson would triumph in a rematch. Both men, along with James Madison, would join Washington and be honored with Presidential Dollars in 2007.

The 2007-D George Washington Presidential Dollar was issued along with the 2007-P George Washington Presidential Dollar; however, the 2007-D was struck with a slightly lower mintage of 163,680,000 coins. When Congress passed the Presidential $1 Coin Act (Public Law 109-145), it had envisioned the new dollar coin series as a viable circulating coin. As such, the mintage of 2007 “golden dollars” was considerably higher than the Mint’s output of 2006 Sacagawea Dollars.

2007-P Washington Presidential Dollar Coin Satin Finish Specimen Strikes

The United States Mint produced Uncirculated Coin Sets, including one example of each coin struck by the United States Mint’s Philadelphia and Denver facilities. Historically, coins from these sets are generally produced using the same procedures used to strike coins for circulation. Still, from 2005-2010, the U.S. Mint opted to “improve” the quality of these sets by using sandblasted dies, which gave the coins a satin finish.

This decision introduced a new type of coin for collectors that lacked enough distinctiveness or appeal to excite the collecting community. While the specimen strikes are usually of excellent quality, often grading MS68 or higher, this is not typically true for the circulation strikes.

In addition to the full 2007 Uncirculated Coin Set, the United States Mint offered the specimen strike coins in a P-D Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set.

Note: PCGS has used both MS and SP designations for the Satin Finish coins.

Design

Obverse:

A large three-quarter profile portrait of President George Washington dominates the obverse. Wrapping clockwise around the top of the design is the inscription GEORGE WASHINGTON; Running counterclockwise beneath the effigy of Washington is the inscription 1st PRESIDENT 1789-1797.

Common Reverse:

Don Everhart’s reverse design features an ant’s-eye view of the Statue of Liberty offset to the left. On the coin, Liberty occupies the bottom right quadrant of the coin, her extended elbow being the coin’s center point. The design is framed by a thin inner circle, which separates the graphic design from the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Beneath Liberty’s extended torch-bearing arm is the denomination $1. This is the common reverse design for all Presidential Dollar coins.

Edge:

The edge of the Presidential Dollar is lettered and features the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the mintmark, the year of issuance, and 13 five-pointed stars. This edge inscription may be oriented facing the obverse (Position A) or the reverse (Position B).
