The 1794 Britain Chichester Elizabeth I Conder Token graded NGC XF45 in brown condition is a very nice example of a popular type of trade token from late 18th-century England. Issued by James Dally, a linen draper in Chichester, Sussex, these tokens helped alleviate the shortage of small change during the 1790s when official copper coins were scarce due to the high price of copper amid wartime.

This particular halfpenny-sized token, about 27mm wide, features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I on one side, honoring her historical visits to Chichester in the 16th century. The reverse typically depicts the Bishop Storey’s High Cross, a famous local landmark near Dally’s shop, with the edge inscribed “PAYABLE AT DALLYS CHICHESTER,” indicating it was redeemable as a halfpenny in his store.

These tokens circulated widely as unofficial currency for everyday small transactions, essentially functioning as “coins” issued by merchants to keep commerce flowing. They are prized today both for their historical context and their charming designs that connect local English history with the practical needs of the era.

Graded XF45 by NGC, this token maintains attractive detail and decent preservation while showing moderate wear expected from circulation. The brown patina adds character and authenticity, typical for copper tokens of this age.

Collectors value Chichester Conder Tokens for their blend of local history, royal homage, and practical numismatic charm, making this a very nice and historically interesting piece to own and display.
